Northwestern Medicine set sights on Bronzeville

Northwestern Medicine plans to build a 75,000-square-foot outpatient center in Bronzeville, Crain’s has learned. The 10-hospital chain said, pending regulatory approvals, the new Near South Side facility will include immediate, primary and specialty care provided by Northwestern physicians, as well as local food options and space for community programming. Additional details like the estimated cost of the project, the exact location of the new facility and the expected opening were not provided. Northwestern’s expansion into Bronzeville is not related to Mercy Hospital & Medical Center’s planned closure, but it does make the move particularly timely. If Mercy shutters as planned in the first half of 2021, there will be roughly 300 fewer beds in the neighborhood, where residents have long been disproportionately affected by chronic conditions and, now, COVID-19.
