July 2, 2020

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 4.8 million in June, and the unemployment rate declined to 11.1%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Notable job gains also occurred in retail trade, education and health services, other services, manufacturing, and professional and business services. The monthly jobs survey was conducted in mid-June, prior to the recent COVID-19 surge in many states across the country.

The healthcare sector added nearly 360,000 jobs in June, including 6,700 hospital jobs.  Year over year (June 2019 to June 2020), the healthcare sector has 650,000 fewer jobs, hospitals 80,000 fewer jobs.

In a separate report released today, the U.S. Dept. of Labor estimates 45,249 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of June 22 in Illinois, and more than 1.4 million new claims were filed across the U.S. last week.
