IHA Cancels Advocacy Day and Quality Advocacy Showcase Due to COVID-19

April 6, 2020

With the active spread of COVID-19 in Illinois, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our two advocacy events in Springfield this month: IHA State Advocacy Day on April 29 and the IHA Quality Advocacy Showcase on April 30.

We had hoped to hold both events, but the Governor’s stay-at-home order through April 30 and the urgency of responding to COVID-19 made these cancellations inevitable.

This unprecedented time has brought together our advocacy efforts and your work to deliver high-quality care in a profound way.  Please know that even without State Advocacy Day and the Quality Advocacy Showcase, IHA is fighting for our members day in and day out and is in regular communication with state legislators so you can provide quality care as the need accelerates.

During this critical time, we urge you to stay in contact with your state legislators to let them know how your hospital is preparing for and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and to make them aware of the issues and challenges you are facing.  While it is not clear yet when the General Assembly will go back into session, IHA is working on a COVID-19 relief package for hospitals and health systems, including Medicaid funding and other support that we will ask state lawmakers to enact.

We are very impressed with the robust turnout in submissions for our fifth annual Quality Advocacy Showcase, even as hospitals were planning intensively for COVID-19. We received 81 projects from hospitals and health systems across the state, including one last week. Your enthusiasm and support of your quality improvement work truly epitomizes how hospitals are going the distance for their communities.

To share your outstanding work with legislators, the media and the general public, at the appropriate time, IHA will:

  • Send participating hospital and health systems a PDF of their Showcase poster and ask that you share it with your legislators;
  • Distribute our online Showcase compendium to all hospitals;
  • Share all Showcase posters with legislators and their teams via social media; and
  • Develop a toolkit for members with best practices on reaching out to legislators and sharing your project on social media and with local news media.

We will provide more information in the coming weeks. If you have any questions about the status of your Showcase submission, please submit your inquiry here.

If you have any questions about legislative or advocacy issues and concerns, please submit your inquiry here.
