The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today 894 new COVID-19 cases and 41 deaths. The number of new cases is down 76% from the peak of seven weeks ago. The state’s weekly death totals have been declining for five consecutive weeks and are now 65% below the peak of six weeks ago. The total number of cases in the state is 139,434 in 101 counties, with a total of 6,810 deaths.

IDPH says that in the past 24 hours, 31,686 test specimens have been processed, with a positivity rate of 2.8%. This marks the first time that the daily state testing number has been over 30,000. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity rate from June 18 to June 24 is 3%.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours increased from 1,614 patients to 1,626 patients. Of that figure, 399 patients are in the ICU, with 216 patients on ventilators. The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations, including those in the ICU, are down more than 60% since early May, and those on ventilators is down 67% since mid-April.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said all regions of the state will move to Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan on Friday, and noted that among the activities that will be allowed include indoor dining at restaurants and bars, movie theaters, museums, zoos, child care and schools. The Governor said the state is launching 12 mobile teams to conduct COVID-19 testing where it is needed around the state and is ramping up its contact tracing capacity – with 550 tracers – and another 250 tracers being added in the next few weeks. Also, IDPH is establishing a county-by-county COVID-19 tracking/mapping tool on its website with local metrics including new cases, test positivity, hospital admissions, ICU availability, and ED visits.

Thursday’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures showed more than 2.37million confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., with 121,809 deaths.
